Northport traces its recorded history to 1849. The local cherry industry started in 1853 on Rev. George Smith’s farm. Many people moved from Canada or New York and for a while, Northport was the largest town in Leelanau County at the turn of the century.

Much of Omena is in the Omena Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. In 1852, Rev. Peter Dougherty established a mission and school. The Omena Presbyterian Church was built in 1858. There was no permanent post office until 1959. Prior to that, mail was picked up at the postmaster's home or business.
