Dark Sky in Northern Leelanau
Thanks to the dark sky committee of Leelanau Energy…
Leelanau Township is working to preserve the naturally dark skies with initiatives to improve area street lighting. This enhances visibility, human health, and preserves natural bird migration in our area.
This year, the Dark Sky Committee of Leelanau Energy is launching a Library Telescope Program, in conjunction with the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS). Telescopes will now be available to check-out for personal use at the Leelanau Township Library in Northport.
Some of our favorite places to see the vivid night sky are:
- Peterson Park
- Leelanau State Park
- Gills Pier Beach
- Grand Traverse Lighthouse at the Leelanau State Park
- Woosley Memorial Airport
- Lighthouse West trail, part of the Leelanau Conservancy Trails
