COLORFUL SPIRITS! Coil Basket Weaving in the Tradition of Native American Culture
Join Sarah K. Chenault in a fun and colorful experience using your own selection of yarns and fabrics and learn the technique of basketry used by Native Americans across North America. Class meets two times. (Note: A second session is offered for different ages)
Materials to bring to class: 20’ of old boat line or other thick rope, at least ¼”-1/2” thick (stiff rope is easier to work with); colorful t-shirts or other thin fabric of your choice (at least 3-5 shirts o r 3-5 yards of fabric or a ball of yarn); bring more colors for more design options (check out thrift stores for affordable and colorful fabrics; charms or any small items that can be sewn onto fabric (like a pendant because it has a loop at the top), and sharp scissors.
Session one is open to students age: 13 and older and is limited to 10 participants. It's offered on July 22 and 24. Cost is $30 for OHS members and $35 for non-members. Classes take place at the Omena Historical Museum. Sarah K. Chenault is a multimedia artist from Texas living in Los Angeles and she frequents her beloved Omena as much as possible. She received her BFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis and MA in Latin American Studies from UCLA. From living abroad in Spain and Colombia she learned the gratification and fun that came from integrating her creative abilities with cultural studies and has since aimed to use these two in her career.
